A strong social media presence is key to the mission of healthcare organizations. It is even more important for agencies like Community Health Centres that pride themselves on innovation, community engagement and civic participation.

While most Community Health Centres have at least taken the basic leap into the social media world, there remains a lot of confusion about what tools to use and how to optimize use.

For starters, the best investment for any CHC to make is to dedicate time to working with other CHCs so that together, we share lessons and build innovative and best practices. The KNhub Discussion Forum is a great place to connect and give/get support.

A number of CHC social media and communications guides and policies have also been posted already in the KNhub’s CHC Resources Directory. Below, you will also find two slide presentations. Here are some additional tips, all of which are relevant for your CHC’s corporate social media and for personal social media accounts.

Twitter and Facebook are still the most valuable pillars of social media for not-for-profit organizations. We also recommend YouTube and Vimeo as important video presentation tools to complement to your social media presence.

It is better to stick to 2-3 tools (eg, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube) and spend the time required to keep those tools active and engaging than it is to spread your limited time across a larger spectrum of tools. The key is engagement.

Connect with other CHCs via social media. See Twitter lists below. And, take advantage of the broader Healthcare Social Media Canada networkIt is a dynamic community full of generous individuals very willing to share.

Social media are engagement tools, not simply broadcast tools. Yes, share your updates, activities and events…but make sure you are tuning in to see how other social media users are engaging you. Don’t worry — there is no expectation that your Twitter or Facebook account will be monitored for minute by minute reactions. But it is good practice to check into your account(s) at least every other day, for a few minutes, to see if and how you should be re-engaging other users.

Don’t auto-post from one tool to the other (eg, from Facebook to Twitter). Research shows that audiences are typically different on Facebook than they are on Twitter, for example. Auto-posting also produces content that is often inaccessible and people and groups are more likely to dis-engage and tune you out when it becomes clear that your content is auto-posted. Here’s an article about this
