[vc_row padding_top=”0″ padding_bottom=”0″][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”87507″ img_size=”600×600″ alignment=”center” css=””][vc_custom_heading source=”post_title” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” use_theme_fonts=”yes” css=””][vc_column_text css=”” text_color=”#000000″]In Halifax, Nova Scotia, the North End Community Health Centre<\/a> (NECHC) operates nine housing units across Halifax and Dartmouth. <\/span>Supported Housing at NECHC includes the Housing First case management team, the 9 buildings they\u00a0own and operate, and two partnerships the organization has with community non-profit housing providers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NECHC<\/span> prioritizes the needs of the <\/span>African Nova Scotian, Indigenous and 2STLGBTQIA+ communities. Their goal is to support housing stability, create communities, and to operate high-quality housing. <\/span>Tenants are supported through a Property Management team of 3 Property Management Assistants, as well as support from \u2018Place-based\u201d Case Managers through the Housing First team.\u00a0 <\/span>All NECHC buildings provide permanent, supported housing in a communal living (rooming house style) environment.\u00a0Tenants sign a lease that includes a schedule B regarding \u2018house rules\u2019. Tenants are expected to pay rent, be a good neighbour and work with each other and the support team to resolve conflicts (should conflict between tenants arise).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Across the 9 housing operations, 26 units are\u00a0designated for the 2SLGBTQIA and gender diverse folks located in central Halifax, 15 units for the African Nova Scotian community located in North End Halifax, 6 units for Indigenous folks in Dartmouth and an additional 56 units across Halifax and Dartmouth open to all folks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Overlook is a unique project of the NECHC, offered in collaboration with the property owner, the Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia (AHANS). Through this partnership, they offer an opportunity to live in a harm reduction, peer supported housing community at 101 Yorkshire Avenue Extension, in Dartmouth. Individuals and couples accepted into this supported housing project receive support for as long as they need while residing at the Overlook. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Oz Supportive Housing Program is a 38-unit supportive housing community, including 10 fully accessible units, designed to provide safe, stable, and community-focused housing for individuals 50+. The program bridges the gap between housing and support services by offering on-site access to a multidisciplinary team, including Supportive Housing Workers, Peer Support Workers, Social Workers, Personal Care Workers, a Registered Nurse, a Recreation Therapist, an Occupational Therapist, and a Physiotherapist.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Recently, NECHC co-hosted the International Street Medicine Symposium of 2026.\u00a0Being the co-host gave NECHC the opportunity to showcase the unique approach and work it does in the area of street medicine including sessions on Harm Reduction Diabetes Care, Actualizing Infectious Disease Management via Outreach, Cultural Considerations while Providing Healthcare to people Experiencing Homelessness and Prescribing Safer Drugs: National, Local and Lived.<\/p>\n

ISMS provided a broad range of subjects from speakers and presenters from across Canada, the United States and from around the world that covered a variety of topics that included Street-based Trama Informed Care, Advocacy and Policy, Encampment Evacuation and the Continuity of Care, Invisible in Rural Spaces: Building Street Medicine Outreach for Unsheltered Populations in a Southeastern Rural County and a Decade of Street Medicine in Practice in Africa: The Tanzania Experience.<\/div>\n

These, along with the other 80+ conference sessions, gave attendees a comprehensive line up for the 4-day event. NECHC was proud to have been this year’s co-host to ISMS and to have helped bring this important event to Halifax.<\/div>\n
