We firmly believe that all Canadians deserve equal access to crucially needed prescription medication, as our organization is committed to advancing\u00a0health equity and well-being for all communities.<\/p>\n\n

These first steps to provide access to contraception and diabetes medications are meaningful and mark positive action to meet the healthcare needs of all Canadians and are a fundamental component of health equity and affordability. This aligns with the CHC model of care,\u00a0<\/em>which promotes accessibility and equity, to reduce the barriers and health disparities resulting from the social determinants of health and improve population health outcomes across Canada.<\/p>\n\n

Like all Canadians, our most vulnerable communities deserve access to compassionate and respectful healthcare. Research shows that investing in a universal Pharmacare strategy will ultimately lower healthcare costs and reduce health system overflow. Additionally, this will lead to a healthier society and economy.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cPharmacare is a crucial step toward equity in healthcare, ensuring that everyone has access to necessary medications. However, it is only one piece of the puzzle,\u201d said Michele Bellows, Chair of the Canadian Association of Community Health Centres and CEO of\u00a0Rideau Health Services<\/a>, in Ontario. \u201cTrue equity in healthcare requires addressing broader issues such as access to primary care, mental health services, and preventive care. It also involves addressing social determinants of health such as income, education, and housing. By recognizing Pharmacare as just one step in this journey, we can work toward a more comprehensive and equitable healthcare system for all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

In December 2021,\u00a0CACHC co-signed a national letter<\/a>\u00a0calling on the Government of Canada to bring forward meaningful legislation on Pharmacare. We are pleased to see all the collective efforts have led to the start of sustainable and accessible change.<\/p>\n\n

As the federal voice for Community Health Centres (CHCs) across Canada, we look forward to being a part of the discussion and action to move towards a national universal single-payer Pharmacare for all Canadians.<\/p>\n\n
