This includes the abundance of shame and stigma in our society. I have always been drawn to work that challenges us to confront bias and stigma, and to talk about the unspoken things that impact how many are perceived and treated.\u00a0 What we believe is the basis of our reality: it is critical that we challenge the deeply entrenched insidious beliefs that suggest that any of us are not worthy of support, necessities, respect, compassion, and love.\u00a0 What I hope for is a society built on compassion and I believe that this could come from open and honest dialogue about the hardest things.\u00a0 It is in these moments we have the capacity to develop compassion and empathy. I have no doubt that, like many others, I have not practised it with perfection, and that there will always be work to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is likely why I have found a compatible home in community health.\u00a0 Working with Klinic and SERC and our local partners through the<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.machmb.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manitoba Association of Community Health (MACH)<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, along with partners from all over Canada through the<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cachc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canadian Association of Community Health Centres (CACHC)<\/a>,<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> has given me the gift of being able to see what can be possible when we create spaces that offer care based on equity and social justice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_79742\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cape.ca\/campaigns\/climate-health-policy\/climate-change-toolkit-for-health-professionals\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79742\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-79742\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cachc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/CAPE-slide-from-CHConnections2019-300x251.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cachc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/CAPE-slide-from-CHConnections2019.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.cachc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/CAPE-slide-from-CHConnections2019-100x84.jpeg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-79742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Check out the Climate Change Toolkit for Health Professional- It has been designed as a tool for health professionals and students in the health care and public health sectors who want to engage more directly on the issue of climate change as educators with their patients, peers and communities, and\/or as advocates for the policies, programs and practices needed to mitigate climate change and\/or prepare for climate change in their workplaces and communities.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nowhere is this more noticeable to me than when I am able to attend the Ontario Alliance for Healthier Communities conference, which was this year co-hosted by CACHC as a national conference entitled<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cachc.ca\/2019conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Community Health Connections 2019<\/a>. <span style=\"color: #000000;\">It took place along with CACHC and Alliance Annual General Meetings, from June 11-13 in Ottawa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here are some of the lessons I took away:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Climate change is a health and social justice issue. As community health, we need to take more leadership in giving voice to this. I encourage you to look up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.ca\/books\/417373\/the-right-to-be-cold-by-sheila-watt-cloutier\/9780143190226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Right to be Cold<\/a> by Sheila Watt-Cloutier who shared with us her perspectives on the impact of climate change on her community and the Inuit people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Political environments can change rapidly, and we are all struggling with the weight of working in what appears to be a rapidly shifting landscape and increased polarization. We need to find ways to support our communities to engage in advocacy at the grassroots, and as organizations to also recognize that we must be responsive to changing needs and environments. We have a great deal that we can learn from our friends south of the border in the U.S., who are working hard to keep the values of community health on the agenda with initiatives such as NACHC&rsquo;s national grassroots advocacy program which includes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcadvocacy.org\/ace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Advocacy Centres of Excellence<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hcadvocacy.org\/ace\/\">.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_79748\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79748\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-79748\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cachc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/LRaskin-2019-award-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cachc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/LRaskin-2019-award-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.cachc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/LRaskin-2019-award.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cachc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/LRaskin-2019-award-100x133.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-79748\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lynne Raskin, CEO of South Riverdale CHC (Toronto)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We all need someone who challenges us to be better. For me this continues to be Lynne Raskin, Executive Director of South Riverdale Community Health <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Centre in Toronto, who is a leader that sets the standard for what we should aspire to be. I had the honour of being there as Lynne was presented with the Joe Leonard Leadership Award from our Ontario partners.\u00a0 Working with Lynne these past three years on the Board of Directors of CACHC has been an honour (I previously wrote about her advocacy\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/klinic.mb.ca\/2018\/06\/lessons-from-toronto-we-can-be-better\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">work on supervised consumption sites here<\/a>.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #000000;\">There were so many things that Lynne said that inspired me, but the moment that sticks with me is earlier in the day in her last CACHC board meeting. My colleagues from across Canada were sharing their concerns about the largely political barriers to setting up supervised consumption sites, which we know ultimately save system time and resources, and, much more importantly, save lives.\u00a0 As we discussed the topic I heard in the background Lynne\u2019s quiet and insistent voice, \u201cJust Do It\u201d she repeated with a low intensity that grounded and reminded me, we cannot simply lament: we have to lead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When I took on this role almost five years ago, I could not have predicted all of the ways it would influence my life. It has challenged me in ways I would have never guessed, and it has been both deeply satisfying and, at times, very difficult. I have no doubt that this is true for many people doing this work, whatever part of it you may be involved in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For the upcoming year, with support from our Boards of Directors and management teams, I have made the decision to reduce my hours to four days a week in order to participate in the Values-Based Leadership Program at Royal Roads University.\u00a0 I made this decision for several reasons:\u00a0 I have heard incredible feedback from colleagues who have attended; I want to develop better strategies to communicate how our shared values are reflected in changes and I want to reflect on and grow from the experiences I have had over the last 12 years as a leader.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ultimately, I hope to develop more tools to support compassionate, values driven dialogue both inside and outside our organizations. I am confident that this is the key to creating positive future changes, and is the why in why so many of us do this work. Since 2016 she has also served as Co-Chair of the Canadian Association of Community Health Centres and is also a Board Member of the Manitoba Association of Community Health (MACH).. Nicole has her Masters' of Social Work (Administration) from the University of Manitoba, as well as a BA with a major in Psychology. The focus of her studies included: community development, organizational development, and population health. Nicole has spent a great deal of her career working in health management and promotion, with a particular focus on mental health. Prior to her role at Klinic Community Health and SERC, Nicole was the Executive Director of the Canadian Mental Health Association - Winnipeg Region for seven years, the last year of which she oversaw the amalgamation of the Winnipeg and Manitoba offices and acted as Executive Director for both. Prior to this Nicole was employed in management with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority where she was responsible for a range of services in community including mental health, public health and home care, as well as community development and health promotion activities. Early in her career Nicole spent time working with government and school divisions on community engagement around population health and early child development.
