Celebrating 100 Years of CHCs in Canada

Community Health Centres (CHCs) are community-governed, non-profit organizations that deliver comprehensive, team-based primary health care to people facing barriers to access. Integrating primary care with mental health services, health promotion, and social supports, CHCs address the social determinants of health and advance equity in communities across Canada.

Over the past century, the CHC model has evolved in response to changing community needs. What began as localized efforts to serve underserved populations has grown into a network of organizations delivering interdisciplinary care, advancing health equity, and strengthening communities across the country.

Mount Carmel Clinic, Canada’s first CHC, is celebrating 100 years of community-driven care in Winnipeg, a milestone that reflects the impact of CHCs across the country.

Care – Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow

CACHC represents and works with Community Health Centres and provincial CHC associations across Canada. Together, we give voice to the needs of individuals, families, and communities across the country, and advocate for policy initiatives that improve health, wellbeing and a more equitable country or all.
Our national strategy focuses on advancing sustainable and reliable funding for CHC operations, and on strengthening the systems and partnerships that support this work. Through collaboration, we amplify the collective voice of CHCs, and advance the CHC movement to ensure improved and equitable access to quality healthcare nationwide.
